All bo shuriken are made from 1018 cold rolled steel, case hardened, and finished with gun bluing. These bo-shuriken are standard Meifu Shinkage Ryu blades and are meant to be thrown, and thrown a lot. These will meet your shuriken-jutsu needs.

After being disappointed with what was available in the market, Jason of the California MSR dojo has been making blades of different styles

A shuriken ( 手裏剣 “sword hidden in the hand”) is a traditional Japanese concealed weapon that was generally used for throwing, and sometimes stabbing or slashing. They are sharpened hand-held blades made from a variety of everyday items such as needles, nails, and knives, as well as coins, washers, and other flat plates of metal.

The major varieties of shuriken are the bō shuriken (棒手裏剣, stick shuriken) and the hira shuriken (平手裏剣, flat shuriken) or shaken (車剣, also read as kurumaken, wheel shuriken). Shuriken were mainly a supplemental weapon to the more commonly used katana sword or yari spear in a warrior’s arsenal, though they often played a pivotal tactical role in battle.[1] The art of wielding the shuriken is known as shurikenjutsu, and was mainly taught as a minor part of the martial arts curriculum of many famous schools, such as Yagyū Shinkage-ryū, Tenshin Shōden Katori Shintō-ryū, Ittō-ryū, Kukishin-ryū and Togakure-ryū.

A few words on Bo Shuriken Maintenance:

As you practice shuriken jutsu, it’s important to keep your gear in good shape.

Through normal wear and tear, blades can and will get damaged.

Throwing damaged blades can result in injury.

Bent tips should be gently hammered straight, and then shaped with a file.

A curled under tip can rip open your finger when throwing point-down.

Broken tips, if they aren’t too bad, should be re-pointed by using a file.

When one shuriken hits another that is already stuck in a target, the point from one can gouge the shaft of another… curling up a sharp burr. These burrs should be removed with a fine file, so they are smooth to the touch.

Any rust should be removed with a green scratchy pad and cleaner.

A light coat of a thin oil, like gun oil or choji oil is a great way to keep your shuriken from rusting.

Always remeber, live shuriken can and will injur you VERY easily. Do not try to catch bounce-backs!

Tabi (足袋) are traditional Japanese socks. Ankle-high and with a separation between the big toe and other toes, they are worn by both men and women with geta and other traditional thronged footwear. Tabi shoes are also essential with traditional clothing such as the kimono. The most common color is white or indigo, and white tabi are worn in formal situations such as at tea ceremonies.

Originally founded by Muso Gonnosuke Katsuyoshi, Shinto Muso-ryu encompasses a comprehensive study of jojutsu (staff), kenjutsu (sword), tanjojutsu (cane), jittejutsu (truncheon) and hojojutsu (arresting cord), and was practiced in the Kuroda domain until first being popularised in Tokyo by Shimizu Takaji-sensei in the 1920s and 30s.

Paul Maloney-sensei started his study of Jo in Japan under the guidance of the late Shimizu-sensei and Donn Draeger-sensei in the 1960s and 70s. Returning to Australia, Shimazu Sensei and Draeger Sensei’s wish for the promotion of Shindo Muso Ryu Jodo has been carried out by the Australian Jodokai, the Australian branch of the International Jodo Federation, founded by Draeger Sensei and now lead by Phil Relnick Sensei. Today, several groups practice Jodo as a classical tradition around Australia in NSW, VIC, QLD, SA and WA. For further details, please visit the Jodokai Australia website.

Hontai Yoshin-Ryu both traces its origins back 18 generations to the founder, Takagi Oriuemon Shigenobu. Takagi was swordsmanship instructor in Shiraishi, Oshu (present day Tohoku region), having mastered Takeuchi-ryu jujutsu, Yoshin-ryu kodachi, Kenko-ryu sojutsu and other arts.

Today, Hontai Yoshin-Ryu is preserved by the grandmaster, Soke Inoue Kyoichi-sensei in Nishinomiya, Hyogo-ken. The teachings concentrate on three central techniques: jujutsu, bojutsu and kodachijutsu. 17th grandmaster, the late Minaki Saburo-sensei further refined the teachings received from his master Kakuno-sensei as “Hontai Yoshin-Ryu”, reforming the teachings to include jujutsu (gyaku, nage, oku, yoshin, tanto-dori and tachi-dori no kata), kodachijutsu (omote, ura and oku no kata), bojutsu (hanbojutsu kihon-waza, kumitachi no kata, chobojutsu kihon-waza, kumiawase [kumibo], kumitachi no kata) as well as sword (iai kenpo, tachi-waza, i-waza). Additionally there are many hidden areas of practice taught at appropriate levels to practitioners of the ryuha.
